An Epilepsy Center

Picture
An Epilepsy Center offers state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and tests to locate the origin of seizures and determine which medication or treatment types will work best for seizures. When medications fail, surgical options are considered, including minimally invasive laser ablation and neurostimulators. Neurosurgery has the ability to eliminate seizures, or significantly reduce them depending on which surgical treatment you are a candidate for.

Approximately one-third of people continue to have seizures despite being on medication or experience unacceptable side-effects. An Epilepsy Center:

  • Believe in no seizures; no side effects are achievable and expected!
  • Are for women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant.
  • Offers a team approach to co-existing medical conditions, including depression, learning disabilities, anxiety, and more.
  • Offers non-medication therapies, including the ketogenic diet.
  • Specialize in rare epilepsies and genetic disorders.
  • Epileptologist - a neurologist with specialized training in epilepsy and seizure disorders.

Learn about the options available to treat seizures, an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit/EMU, and how they have the ability to cure epilepsy in the video below from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.  www.naec-epilepsy.org

Guidelines to follow for epilepsy medical care:

Level 1 care - an emergency room or primary care physician’s office.  If seizures are not brought under control after 3 months with a primary care provider, it’s time for a neurologist or an Epilepsy Center.

Level 2 care - a neurologist; an internal medicine doctor for the brain. If seizures continue despite treatment for more than one year or after the trial of two medications, request a referral to an Epilepsy Center.

EPILEPSY CENTER
Level 3 and 4 care

An Epilepsy Center’s comprehensive team has significant training in diagnosing and treating seizures, including many different kinds of doctors. These experts provide thorough, progressive medical care and advanced therapies. They offer complete evaluations for routine care and specialize in uncontrolled seizures (i.e., intractable, or refractory epilepsy).

Epilepsy Centers are categorized as a Level 3 or Level 4 Center.  Click here to understand the differentiating features of epilepsy care.
